There’s cool serendipity in picking up a collection of essays and discovering that most of the authors are from the city you’re three days away from visiting. Besides, it’s fun to get a little taste of the subversive flavor for which San Francisco is famous (even when it occasionally waxes self-indulgent or preachy).
